1. Victory in the movement demanding the activation of the Placement Cell.
The Placement Cell of the University of Calcutta had remained inactive for a long time. On 16 July 2024, the SFI organized a “March to the Placement Cell” movement demanding placement opportunities. As a result of SFI’s movement, a positive change returned to the University of Calcutta, and the Placement Cell of the University became active again.
Within a week, renowned companies such as Accenture and the World Bank came to the University of Calcutta for placement. Placement notices from Bharati Bhavan Press reached several Science and Social Science departments. The Department of Comparative Indian Language and Literature received a placement notice from HarperCollins Press.
It was due to SFI’s movement that the Placement Cell of the University of Calcutta became active once again.
The struggle must continue! Many thanks to those who remained part of that movement.
2. Victory in the movement against the fee hike.
Our slogan was:
“ঘরেতে আয় বাড়েনা ভাই,
ফি বৃদ্ধি রুখতে চাই!”
It was 2024! The cost of all courses at the University of Calcutta was increasing. Earlier, the cost of M.Tech had already been raised. In the new fee structure, the laboratory fee for all M.Tech courses was increased by ₹300 per month. In the case of B.Tech, the laboratory fee was also increased by ₹100 per month. We had been in the movement from that very day.
The state and central governments were not providing adequate funds to the university. Should that burden be taken from the pockets of students? SFI stood up to resist it.
We started a movement protesting the increase in fees in various sectors, including admission and entrance examinations. As a result of the movement, the authorities were compelled to call a Faculty Council meeting and were forced to reduce the increased fees.
3. Victory in the movement demanding the closure of illegal union rooms at the University of Calcutta.
The last student union election at the University of Calcutta was held in 2017. Since then, student union elections have remained suspended. Despite the absence of an elected student union, the union rooms across various campuses of the University of Calcutta had turned into dens of lumpen elements of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad.
Sitting in these union rooms, the goons of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad would drink alcohol and prepare blueprints for various anti-social activities across the campuses.
On 22 April 2025, under the pressure of a 23-hour-long gherao movement organized by SFI, the authorities of the University of Calcutta were compelled to lock the illegal union rooms on campus. Shortly afterwards, the High Court issued an order directing the closure of all illegal union rooms across the state.
It was SFI Calcutta University that showed the way. SFI broke the strongholds of the lumpen elements of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad.
4. Promise Kept by SFI on the Promise Day: SFI Reopens the Canteen in Technology Campus!
On 11 February 2025, under the leadership of the Students’ Federation of India, the general students of University of Calcutta began a just struggle. Our demand was clear — the canteen must be reopened for students, providing good quality food at fair prices at Technology Campus, University of Calcutta.
On 11 February 2026 — exactly one year later — our demand was fulfilled.
The canteen has reopened on our terms!
This victory proves that there is no alternative to an organised student movement. This victory does not belong to SFI alone; it belongs to every ordinary student who stood by us throughout this long struggle.
5. Students' Federation of India ensures the right to free medical treatment at the Students' Health Home for students of University of Calcutta
On 20 February 2026, Students' Federation of India at University of Calcutta organised a unique protest movement.
The voice of the historic Students' Health Home, an institution built by students themselves, echoed across the university campus. The demand was clear: the authorities must ensure free medical services at the Students’ Health Home for university students through the use of a valid university ID card.
After a continuous struggle, the authorities were compelled to accept the demand. SFI successfully secured this demand through its movement.
Now, students can avail themselves of the services of the Students’ Health Home simply by carrying their valid ID card issued by the University of Calcutta.
